  39. 1.  WHAT IS SNAGIT?
  40. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  41.   SnagIt has been providing Microsoft Windows users with an easy way
  42.   to capture and print Windows screens since it was first released in
  43.   1990.  In "Windows 3.1 Secrets," author Brian Livingston calls
  44.   SnagIt "the print utility Microsoft Windows forgot."
  45.  
  46.   SnagIt allows Windows users to capture an entire screen, an
  47.   individual window or a user defined portion of the screen.  SnagIt
  48.   will ALSO capture the entire contents of a scrolling window!  In
  49.   addition, SnagIt also accepts input directly from the Windows
  50.   clipboard or a Windows bitmap (BMP) file.  Once captured, SnagIt can
  51.   send the image to the printer, the clipboard, or a graphics file.
  52.  
  53.   Captured images can be pasted into other Windows applications such
  54.   as word processors and desktop publishing programs from the Windows
  55.   clipboard or by importing the images from saved graphic files.
  56.  
  57.   Software developers will find that SnagIt's full DDE support allows
  58.   it's functionality to easily be incorporated into other Windows
  59.   applications.  SnagIt also provides MAPI support for Windows 95 and
  60.   NT, allowing captured images to be readily sent in an e-mail message.

  62. 1.1 What is the SnagIt Twin Pack?
  63.  
  64.   Many organizations are in the early stages of the transition from
  65.   Windows 3.1x to Windows 95 or NT.  To assist during this period,
  66.   TechSmith is offering the SnagIt Twin Pack.  It includes a 16-bit
  67.   version, tailored for Windows 3.1x, as well as a true 32-bit version
  68.   for Windows 95 and NT. The setup program automatically detects the
  69.   workstation's operating environment and loads the appropriate
  70.   version.  The purchaser is licensed to run either version and to
  71.   switch between them without further payment. Purchasing the Twin
  72.   Pack provides the benefits of running SnagIt today without the
  73.   penalty of Windows 95 or NT upgrade fees in the future.

  76. 2.  SNAGIT TWIN PACK SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  77. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  78.   In order to run SnagIt, your system must meet these specifications:
  79.  
  80.   o  An IBM PC or compatible that meets the minimum hardware
  81.      requirements for your version of Microsoft Windows.
  82.  
  83.   o  Microsoft Windows 3.1x, Windows For Workgroups 3.1x,
  84.      Windows NT 3.51 (or higher) or Windows 95 installed and
  85.      configured on your system.
  86.  
  87.   o  A mouse or other pointing device
  88.  
  89.   o  For printed output, a Windows-supported printer that can print
  90.      bitmaps. (This includes most of the laser, dot matrix and ink jet
  91.      printers that Windows supports.  Plotters are not recommended for
  92.      use with SnagIt due to their inability to print bitmaps.)

  114. 3.  GETTING HELP
  115. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  116. 3.1 Using SnagIt's On-line Help
  117.  
  118.   SnagIt's on-line Help system is compatible with the Windows Help
  119.   subsystems.  The SnagIt Help file contains all of the information
  120.   you'll need to use SnagIt.
  121.  
  122.   To access SnagIt Help, select Help from the SnagIt menu bar, then
  123.   Help Index from the drop-down menu.
  124.  
  125.   To get a quick overview of SnagIt essentials, select Quick Help from
  126.   the Help menu.
  127.  
  128.   To acquire information about your screen mode and printer type,
  129.   select System Info from the Help menu.
  130.  
  131.   When you register SnagIt, you will receive a software key that will
  132.   disable the evaluation time-limit and remove all registration
  133.   reminder screens.

  286. 5.  KNOWN PROBLEMS OR LIMITATIONS

  290.     o  SnagIt/32 hangs on e-mail output on Windows 95 if only 16-bit
  291.        MS Mail has been configured (i.e. MAPI is in use, but neither
  292.        MS Exchange or any other 32-bit MAPI mail client has been
  293.        configured).
  294.  
  295. 5.2 16-bit Version - SnagIt
  296.  
  297.     o  Does not support any of the SnagIt/32 v3.1 or later versions
  298.        additions or enhancements.

  300.     o  Does not support e-mail as an output (i.e. MAPI mail clients).

  309. 6.  SETUP AND CONFIGURATION
  310. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  311. 6.1 Installation Instructions
  312.  
  313.   The SnagIt installation program SETUP.EXE is a Microsoft Windows
  314.   application.  You must have Windows, Windows for Workgroups, Windows
  315.   NT or Windows 95 installed prior to installing SnagIt.  Setup will
  316.   automatically detect the version of Windows in use and copy the
  317.   appropriate files during the install.  To install SnagIt, perform
  318.   the following steps:
  319.  
  320.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  321.  
  322.   2. Insert the SnagIt Twin Pack diskette into a floppy drive.
  323.  
  324.   For Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 users:
  325.  
  326.   3. From the Start menu, select Run
  327.  
  328.   For Windows 3.1x and Windows NT 3.51 users:
  329.  
  330.   3. From the Program Manager menu bar, choose File, and select Run
  331.      from the drop down menu.
  332.  
  333.   For all users:
  334.  
  335.   4. In the dialog box, enter:
  336.           a:\setup
  337.      (If you are installing SnagIt from a diskette drive other than
  338.      the A drive, you will need to change the drive letter in the
  339.      command line above.)
  340.  
  341.   5. Click on the OK button.
  342.  
  343.   6. When you have finished entering the setup information, click on
  344.      the Install button to install SnagIt.
  345.  
  346.  
  347. 6.2  Uninstall Instructions
  348.  
  349.   If after installing SnagIt Twin Pack, you find it necessary to
  350.   remove the software from your computer, perform the following steps:
  351.  
  352.   Uninstall instructions for Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0
  353.  
  354.   1. Run the Windows Control Panel
  355.  
  356.   2. Open the Add/Remove Programs applet from Control Panel.
  357.  
  358.   3. Select SnagIt from the list of applications that can uninstalled
  359.      by Windows.
  360.  
  361.   4. Click on the Add/Remove button to uninstall SnagIt.
  362.  
  363.   Uninstall instructions for Windows NT 3.51
  364.  
  365.   1. Select the FILE RUN menu option in Program Manager.
  366.  
  367.   2. Type in the command line the following:
  368.  
  369.      TSCUNST /UN
  370.  
  371.   3. Press OK to uninstall SnagIt.
  372.  
  373.   If the uninstall program encounters errors, or if you have
  374.   Windows 3.x, see the following section for uninstall instructions.
  375.  
  376.  
  377. 6.3  Manual Uninstall Instructions
  378.  
  379.   If you do not have Windows 95 or encountered a problem during the
  380.   uninstall, here are the steps you can take to manually uninstall
  381.   SnagIt from your computer.
  382.  
  383.   Uninstall Instructions for Windows 3.1x and WFW 3.1x
  384.  
  385.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  386.  
  387.   2. In Program Manager, find the program group in which SnagIt was
  388.      installed. Click once on the SnagIt icon to highlight it. Press
  389.      the delete key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program item.
  390.  
  391.   3. If you selected "Start SnagIt when Windows Starts" when
  392.      installing SnagIt, delete SnagIt from the Startup group.
  393.  
  394.      In Program Manager, find the Startup group. Click once on the
  395.      SnagIt icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm that
  396.      you wish to delete the program item.
  397.  
  398.   4. Run File Manager and change to the directory in which you
  399.      installed SnagIt.  Delete the files SNAGIT.EXE and SNAGIT.HLP.
  400.  
  401.   Uninstall Instructions for Windows NT and Windows 95
  402.  
  403.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  404.  
  405.   For Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 users:
  406.  
  407.   2. From the Start Menu, select Settings and then Taskbar. Now
  408.      configure your Start Menu Programs by clicking on the Advanced
  409.      button.
  410.  
  411.   3. Find the program group in which SnagIt/32 was installed. Click
  412.      once on the SnagIt/32 filename to highlight it. Press the delete
  413.      key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program item.
  414.  
  415.   4. If you selected "Start SnagIt/32 when Windows Starts" when
  416.      installing SnagIt/32, delete SnagIt/32 from the Startup group.
  417.  
  418.      Follow step #2 and then find the Startup group. Click once on the
  419.      SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm
  420.      that you wish to delete the program item.
  421.  
  422.   5. Run Windows Explorer and change to the directory in which you
  423.      installed SnagIt/32. Delete the files SnagIt32.EXE and
  424.      SnagIt32.HLP.
  425.  
  426.   For Windows NT 3.51 users:
  427.  
  428.   2. In Program Manager, find the program group in which SnagIt/32 was
  429.      installed. Click once on the SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it.
  430.      Press the delete key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program
  431.      item.
  432.  
  433.   3. If you selected "Start SnagIt/32 when Windows Starts" when
  434.      installing SnagIt/32, delete SnagIt/32 from the Startup group.
  435.  
  436.      In Program Manager, find the Startup group. Click once on the
  437.      SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm
  438.      that you wish to delete the program item.
  439.  
  440.   4. Run File Manager and change to the directory in which you
  441.      installed SnagIt/32. Delete the files SnagIt32.EXE and
  442.      SnagIt32.HLP.

  445. 7.  STARTING AND USING SNAGIT
  446. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  447.   To start SnagIt, double-click on the SnagIt icon in the Accessories
  448.   group.  (If you specified a group other than Accessories during
  449.   SnagIt installation, look in that group for the SnagIt icon.)
  450.  
  451.   Double-clicking on the SnagIt icon will execute SnagIt and bring
  452.   it to the foreground in its maximized form.  When SnagIt is
  453.   maximized, you may change any of the setup options (input, output,
  454.   format, etc.) from the SnagIt menus.
  455.  
  456.   You can also invoke SnagIt (that is, instruct SnagIt to capture an
  457.   image) while it is maximized, though it will usually be more
  458.   convenient to minimize SnagIt before doing your screen captures.
  459.  
  460.   If you selected the "Load when Windows starts" checkbox during
  461.   installation, SnagIt will start automatically the next time you
  462.   start Windows.
  463.  
  464. 7.1 SnagIt Default Settings
  465.  
  466.   When you install SnagIt, it uses the following default options:
  467.  
  468.   o  Input is set to Screen.  This means that when SnagIt is invoked,
  469.      it will capture the entire Windows desktop.
  470.  
  471.   o  Output is set to Printer.  This means that when SnagIt is
  472.      invoked, it will send the captured image to the Windows default
  473.      printer for printing.
  474.  
  475.   o  Format is set to Color.  This means that SnagIt will capture the
  476.      image with the screen colors intact.  (In most cases you can
  477.      print images using this format setting, even if your printer is
  478.      not a color printer. For additional information about SnagIt
  479.      format options, see the Format options topic in the SnagIt Help
  480.      file.)
  481.  
  482.   o  Printer Scale is set to Fit on Page.  This means that SnagIt will
  483.      output the captured image (on paper) at a size similar as the
  484.      image appears on the Windows screen but will reduce the image if
  485.      it is longer than one page.
  486.  
  487.   Refer to the SnagIt Help file for additional information on setting
  488.   SnagIt's input, output, format and other options.
  489.  
  490.   You can tell which settings SnagIt is using by looking at the bottom
  491.   of the SnagIt window when the program is maximized.
  492.  
  493. 7.2 Invoking SnagIt with <CTRL><SHIFT><P>
  494.  
  495.   Once you have SnagIt's parameters set as you want them, you are
  496.   ready to perform screen captures with SnagIt.
  497.  
  498.   The default hot-key sequence for invoking SnagIt is <Ctrl><Shift><P>.
  499.   When you press these keys, SnagIt will capture an image (determined
  500.   by the input parameter you selected), and send that image to the
  501.   output device you selected. To invoke SnagIt using a different
  502.   hotkey combination, see the Change Hotkeys topic in the SnagIt Help
  503.   file.

  505. 7.3 Using the Mouse to Select Images
  506.  
  507.   You will need a mouse or other pointing device with SnagIt.
  508.   The left and right mouse buttons work as follows:
  509.  
  510.   Left Button     Selects SnagIt menu options, and selects screen
  511.                   regions and windows to capture.
  512.  
  513.   Right Button    Cancels a region or window selection, if you press
  514.                   it before you finish making the selection (that is,
  515.                   before you release the left mouse button).
  516.

  518. 8. REGISTERING SNAGIT TWIN PACK
  519. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  520.   This program and its associated files are part of an evaluation
  521.   package copyrighted by TechSmith Corporation. SnagIt is not in the
  522.   public domain.  This program must be registered if it is used
  523.   beyond the 45 day evaluation period.
  524.  
  525.   Single-User SnagIt Twin Pack
  526.  
  527.   Registration entitles the licensee to install either the 32 bit or
  528.   the 16 bit version of SnagIt and to switch between the two without
  529.   further payment.  The single-user license price is $39.95.
  530.  
  531.   When you register SnagIt Twin Pack, you have the option of
  532.   requesting a registered version of the software on diskette or of
  533.   requesting a software key to register the version you have. The
  534.   software key immediately removes all registration reminder screens
  535.   and evaluation expiration dates.
  536.  
  537.   Multi-User SnagIt Twin Pack
  538.  
  539.   Registration entitles the licensed organization to install 10 copies
  540.   of SnagIt, in any combination of 16 bit and 32 bit. A single diskette
  541.   is shipped along with the multi-user license.  The 10-user license
  542.   price is $200.00.
  543.  
  544.   Registration Instructions
  545.  
  546.   1.  Select the SnagIt program's Help menu.
  547.  
  548.   2.  Select How to Register from the menu.
  549.  
  550.   3.  Click on the Registration Form button.  Enter your registration
  551.       information in the fields provided.
  552.  
  553.       NOTE: You must specify a name or company name when you register.
  554.             Your software key will be personalized for that name
  555.             ONLY.  Your key will NOT not work if you change this name
  556.             after you have sent in your registration.
  557.  
  558.   4.  When you are finished, select OK. This will create a text file
  559.       called REGISTER.TXT in the SnagIt default directory. This is
  560.       your registration and order form.  It includes a price sheet and
  561.       your Product ID number.
  562.  
  563.   5.  Windows Notepad will now open REGISTER.TXT automatically,
  564.       allowing you to edit and or print the registration form.  While
  565.       you are editing, please complete any blank items, including
  566.       quantities, totals, and payment information. DO NOT EDIT THE
  567.       PRODUCT ID NUMBER. Note that shipping charges are only
  568.       applicable to diskette orders.
  569.  
  570.   6.  Return the registration form, with payment, to TechSmith
  571.       Corporation by any of the methods described on the form.  Upon
  572.       receipt of your order, TechSmith will generate your diskette or
  573.       software key. It will then be sent to you by the method of
  574.       your choice, either e-mail, fax, postal delivery or other.
  575.  
  576.   If you have elected to receive a software key, use the following
  577.   steps to complete the registration process.
  578.  
  579.   7.  Select the Help menu.
  580.  
  581.   8.  Select Enter Software Key from the menu.
  582.  
  583.   9.  Enter your registration key, exactly as it is shown, in the
  584.       field provided.
  585.  
  586.   10. Press OK.
  587.  
  588.   Your software is now registered!  All the registration reminder
  589.   screens and software expiration dates will be removed.  If you have
